QUESTION:

A house is maintained at  and , and warm air inside a house is forced to leave the house at a rate of  as a result of outdoor air at  infiltrating into the house through the cracks. Determine the rate of net energy loss of the house due to mass transfer.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 4

Warm air in a house is forced to leave by the infiltrating cold outside air at a specified rate. The net energy loss due to mass transfer is to be determined.

Assumptions are

1. The flow of the air into and out of the house through the cracks is steady.

2. The kinetic and potential energies are negligible.

3. Air is an ideal gas with constant specific heats at room temperature.

The gas constant of air is  (Table A-1). The constant pressure specific heat of air at room temperature is  (Table A-2).
