QUESTION:

Problem 21P

Find the potential outside a charged metal sphere (charge Q, radius R) placed in an otherwise uniform electric field E0. Explain clearly where you are setting the zero of potential.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 4

A charged metal sphere’s electric potential which is outside the sphere is being calculated with the help of the superposition of the potential of the point charge that has charge  that is centred at the origin and also the potential due to the induced charges.

When a particular sphere of metal is being placed inside an external electric field, the positive charge mainly moves to the northern surface and also the negative charge mainly moves towards southern surface because of the electric field. Because of these, the metal sphere has a charge  and also the radius .
