Solved: In the so-called vector model of the atom, space

Chapter , Problem 69

(choose chapter or problem)

In the so-called vector model of the atom, space quantizationof angular momentum (Fig. 39-3) is illustrated as shown inFig. 39-28. The angular momentum vector of magnitudeL = \/ ( + 1) h is thought of as precessing around thez axis (like a spinning top or gyroscope) in such a way that thez component of angular momentum, Lz = m^h, also staysconstant. Calculate the possible values for the angle 6between L and the z axis (a) for = 1, (b) = 2, and(c) = 3. (d) Determine the minimum value of 6 for = 100 and = 106. Is zthis consistent with thecorrespondence principle?
