QUESTION:

Which structure or compartment is part of the symplast?

a. the interior of a vessel element

b. the interior of a sieve tube

c. the cell wall of a mesophyll cell

d. an extracellular air space

e. the cell wall of a root hair

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

The sieve tube elements are specialized cells arranged end to end, forming long sieve tubes. Thus the solution that flows through them is called the phloem sap. This phloem sap is thus a portion of the symplast as it is continuous from one sieve tube to the other. The vessel elements are structures that are dead at maturity and do not contain protoplasm within. Thus they lack plasmodesmata and symplastic connections. Thus the interior of a vessel element is not a symplastic route.
