Compute L1 1 s2 + 2s + 5 as follows: (a) Verify that s2 + 2s + 5 = (s + 1 + 2i)(s + 1 2i). (b) Use partial fractions to write 1 s2 + 2s + 5 = A s + 1 + 2i + B s + 1 2i , where A and B are (complex) constants. (c) Use Exercise 19 to take the inverse Laplace transform of each term computed in part (b). (d) Simplify the sum of the inverse Laplace transforms obtained in part (c) to obtain the desired inverse Laplace transform.
