Solved: The drawing shows a parallel plate capacitor.

Chapter 19, Problem 19.214

(choose chapter or problem)

The drawing shows a parallel plate capacitor. One-half of the region between the plates is filled with a material that has a dielectric constant 1. The other half is filled with a material that has a dielectric constant 2. The area of each plate is A, and the plate separation is d. The potential difference across the plates is V. Note especially that the charge stored by the capacitor is q1 q2 CV, where q1 and q2 are the charges on the area of the plates in contact with materials 1 and 2, respectively. Show that C 0 A(1 2)/(2d). *
