Chapter , Problem 41

(choose chapter or problem)

A particle passes through a mass spectrometer as illustratedin Figure P19.36. The electric field betweenthe plates of the velocity selector has a magnitude of8 250 V/m, and the magnetic fields in both the velocityselector and the deflection chamber have magnitudesof 0.093 1 T. In the deflection chamber the particlestrikes a photographic plate 39.6 cm removed from itsexit point after traveling in a semicircle. (a) What is themass-to-charge ratio of the particle? (b) What is themass of the particle if it is doubly ionized? (c) What isits identity, assuming its an element?
