QUESTION:

Use the concepts of the kinetic-molecular model to explain: (a) why the pressure of a gas in a rigid container increases as heat is added to the gas and (b) why the pressure of a gas increases as we compress it, even if we do not change its temperature

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

(a)

The kinetic energy of each atom of the gas will increase when heat is added into the gas. The kinetic energy has the direct relationship with the speed of particle so, their speed also increases. Therefore, the gas atoms travelling with high speed exert a greater force in the wall of the container. Thus, this is the reason the pressure of a gas in a rigid container increases.
