QUESTION:

Problem 44P

IP (a) Which has the greater momentum, a photon of red light or a photon of blue light? Explain. (b) Calculate the momentum of a photon of red light (f = 4.0 × 1034 Hz) and a photon of blue light (f = 7.9 × 1014 Hz).

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2:

a)

Here, we have to find which of the photons will have a larger momentum.

We know from de broglie’s hypothesis that, the momentum of a particle is inversely proportional to its wavelength . As the wavelength of blue light is much smaller than red light, the momentum of blue light is greater.
