The solvent diethyl ether can be mixed with water butonly by shaking the two liquids together. After the shakingis stopped, the liquids separate into two layers, muchlike oil and vinegar. The free-base form of the alkaloidcaffeine is readily soluble in diethyl ether but not inwater. Suggest what might happen to the caffeine of acaffeinated beverage if the beverage was first made alkalinewith sodium hydroxide and then shaken with somediethyl ether.
