Chapter 7, Problem 63

(choose chapter or problem)

Big (Lack of) Men on Campus. The bar graph shows the number of bachelor’s degrees, in thousands, awarded to men and women in the United States for four selected years from 1980 to 2010. The trend indicated by the graphs is among the hottest topics of debate among college-admissions officers. Some private liberal arts colleges have quietly begun special efforts to recruit men—including admissions preferences for them.

Exercises 63–64 involve the graphs of models for the data shown in the rectangular coordinate system.

a. Use the two points for women shown by the blue voice balloons to find a function in the form W(x) = mx + b that models the number of bachelor’s degrees, W(x), in thousands, awarded to women x years after 1980.

b. Use the model from part (a) to project the number of bachelor’s degrees that will be awarded to women in 2020.
