Solved: Harmonic Motion The displacement from equilibrium

Chapter 4, Problem 4.2.76

(choose chapter or problem)

Harmonic Motion The displacement from equilibrium of an oscillating weight suspended by a spring and subject to the damping effect of friction is given by where y is the displacement (in feet) and t is the time (in seconds). (a) What is the initial displacement (b) Use a graphing utility to complete the table. (c) The approximate times when the weight is at its maximum distance from equilibrium are shown in the table in part (b). Explain why the magnitude of the maximum displacement is decreasing. What causes this decrease in maximum displacement in the physical system? What factor in the model measures this decrease? (d) Find the first two times that the weight is at the equilibrium point
