Babys Sleeping Position Does a babyssleeping position affect the development of motorskills? In one study, published in the Archives ofPediatric Adolescent Medicine, 343 full-term infantswere examined at their 4-month checkups for variousdevelopmental milestones, such as rolling over,grasping a rattle, reaching for an object, and soon.16 The babys predominant sleep positioneitherprone (on the stomach) or supine (on the back) or sidewas determined by a telephone interview withthe parent. The sample results for 320 of the 343infants for whom information was received areshown here:Prone Supine or SideNumber of Infants 121 199Number That Roll Over 93 119The researcher reported that infants who slept in theside or supine position were less likely to roll over atthe 4-month checkup than infants who slept primarilyin the prone position (P .001). Use a large-sampletest of hypothesis to confirm or refute theresearchers conclusion.
