(choose chapter or problem)

The authors of the article Predicting ProfessionalSports Game Outcomes from Intermediate GameScores (Chance, 1992: 1822) used a chi-squared test todetermine whether there was any merit to the idea thatbasketball games are not settled until the last quarter, whereas baseball games are over by the seventh inning. They also considered football and hockey. Data was collectedfor 189 basketball games, 92 baseball games,80hockey games, and 93 football games. The games analyzedwere sampled randomly from all games played duringthe 1990 season for baseball and football and for the19901991 season for basketball and hockey. For eachgame, the late-game leader was determined, and then itwas noted whether the late-game leader actually ended upwinning the game. The resulting data is summarized in theaccompanying table. Late-Game Late-GameSport Leader Wins Leader LosesBasketball 150 39Baseball 86 6Hockey 65 15Football 72 21The authors state that Late-game leader is defined asthe team that is ahead after three quarters in basketballand football, two periods in hockey, and seven inningsin baseball. The chi-square value on three degrees offreedom is 10.52 sP , .015d.a. State the relevant hypotheses and reach a conclusionusing a 5 .05.b. Do you think that your conclusion in part (a) can beattributed to a single sport being an anomaly?
