(a) For a maximum torsional deflection of 0.08 per foot, show for a round shaft

Chapter 17, Problem 17.34D

(choose chapter or problem)

(a) For a maximum torsional deflection of \(0.08^{\circ}\) per foot, show for a round shaft that

d = \(4.6\left(\frac{\mathrm{hp}}{n}\right)^{0.25}\)

where d =  shaft diameter, in., hp = horsepower, and n =  shaft speed, rpm. (The torsional deflection of \(0.08^{\circ}\) per foot is a safe general maximum historically recommended value.)

(b) Plot shaft diameter ( d from 0.5 to 2.5 in.) versus shaft speed ( n from 100 to 1000 rpm ) for various horsepower values (hp from \(\frac{1}{8} \mathrm{hp}\) to 20 hp).
