Chapter 9, Problem 54

(choose chapter or problem)

Teen Court is a juvenile diversion program designed tocircumvent the formal processing of first-time juvenileoffenders within the juvenile justice system. The article AnExperimental Evaluation of Teen Courts (J. ofExperimental Criminology, 2008: 137163) reported on astudy in which offenders were randomly assigned either toTeen Court or to the traditional Department of JuvenileServices method of processing. Of the 56 TC individuals, 18subsequently recidivated (look it up!) during the 18-monthfollow-up period, whereas 12 of the 51 DJS individuals didso. Does the data suggest that the true proportion of TCindividuals who recidivate during the specified follow-upperiod differs from the proportion of DJS individuals whodo so? State and test the relevant hypotheses by obtaining aP-value and then using a significance level of .10.
