Testing Relativity. A meson produced at rest has a lifetime of18 nanoseconds Thus, in its own referenceframe, a meson will always think it is at rest and thereforewill decay after 18 nanoseconds. Suppose a meson is producedin a particle accelerator at a speed of 0.998c. How longwill scientists see the particle last before it decays? Briefly explainhow an experiment like this helps verify the special theoryof relativity. (Hint: Use the time dilation equation fromCosmic Calculations 13.2.)
