The artificial sweetener aspartame is prepared from two amino acids—namely, aspartic acid and the methyl ester of phenylalanine. The structure of this ester derivative of phenylalanine has a –CH3 group instead of an –H on the –CO2H group of the amino acid. Draw the structure of aspartame which has aspartic acid as the N terminal amino acid.
