Chapter 6, Problem 46

(choose chapter or problem)

Before beginning this exercise, the group needs to read andsolve Exercise 40.a. A political group is planning a demonstration on 95thStreet between 113th Place and 117th Court for 5 p.m.Wednesday. The problem becomes one of minimizingtraffic flow on 95th Street (between 113th and 117th)without causing traffic tie-ups on other streets. Onepossible solution is to close off traffic on 95th Streetbetween 113th and 117th (let x6 = 0). What can groupmembers conclude about x7 under these conditions?b. Working with a matrix allows us to simplify theproblem caused by the political demonstration, but itdid not actually solve the problem. There are an infinitenumber of solutions; each value of x7 we choose givesus a new picture. We also assumed x6 was equal to 0;changing that assumption would also lead to differentsolutions. With your group, design another solutionto the traffic flow problem caused by the politicaldemonstration.
