Here we have to calculate the oxidation number of manganese in the following:

Step 1

(a) MnO42– 

Here the charge of O= -2,

The oxidation state (O.N) of Mn in MnO42–  can be calculated as follow,

O.N= Number of atoms present charge of the atom = total charge on the compound

Let the oxidation number of Mn is X

X + 4O.N of O = -2

 X + 4(-2) = -2

X -8 = -2

X = 8-2

X = +6

Hence the oxidation number of Mn in MnO42–  is found to be +6.
