QUESTION: Problem 60P

Discuss each conclusion from a study of redox reactions:

(a) The sulfide ion functions only as a reducing agent.

(b) The sulfate ion functions only as an oxidizing agent.

(c) Sulfur dioxide functions as an oxidizing or a reducing agent.

ANSWER:

Solution 60P

Here we have to discuss each conclusion from a study of redox reactions:

Reducing agent:- Loss of electron is known as oxidation reaction and the atom or compound which losses electron is called as reducing agent.

Oxidizing agent:- Gain of electron is known as reduction reaction and the atom or compound which gain electron is called as oxidizing agent.

Step 1

(a) The sulfide ion functions only as a reducing agent.

S atom is present in group 16, thus it's possible highest oxidation number is +6 and its lowest oxidation number is 6-8 = -2, hence sulfide ion occurs in S2- and it can increase its oxidation number up to +6 during an oxidation-reduction reaction. As it is known that the increase in oxidation number indicates oxidation reaction .

So S2- can only function as reducing agent.
