QUESTION: Problem 61P

Discuss each conclusion from a study of redox reactions:

(a) The nitride ion functions only as a reducing agent.

(b) The nitrate ion functions only as an oxidizing agent.

(c) The nitrite ion functions as an oxidizing or a reducing agent.

ANSWER:

Solution 61P

Here we have to discuss each conclusion from a study of redox reactions:

Step 1

(a) The nitride ion functions only as a reducing agent.

N atom is present in group 15, thus it's possible highest oxidation number is +5 and its lowest oxidation number is -3 (lowest oxidation number of an element can be obtained by taking valency of an element with a -ve sign), hence nitride ion occurs in N3- and it can increase its oxidation number up to +5 during an oxidation-reduction reaction. As it is known that the increase in oxidation number indicates oxidation reaction .

So N3- can only function as reducing agent.
