QUESTION: Problem  16P

How does the aufbau principle, in connection with the periodic law, lead to the format of the periodic table?

ANSWER:

Solution 16P:

Step 1:

Periodic Law:

According to periodic law, the elements are similar properties when they are arranged by atomic number into rows and columns in the periodic table.

The electronic configuration of Na (atomic number 11) is . There are one electron in the outer shell of Na.

Similarly,

The electronic configuration of K (atomic number 19) is . There are one electron in the outer shell of K.

Since, both Na and K has one electron in their outer shell. Thus both the elements belong to same group 1A in the periodic table. Thus, both the Na and K has similar chemical properties.
