QUESTION:

Problem 35P

Use MO diagrams and the bond orders you obtain from them to answer:

(a) Is Be2+ stable?

(b) Is Be2+ diamagnetic?

(c) What is the outer (valence) electron configuration of Be2+?

ANSWER:

Solution 35P

Here we have to use MO diagrams and the bond orders  obtained from it to answer the following questions.

Step 1

(a) Is Be2+ stable

1st we have to draw the MO diagram of Be2+ ion .

The electronic configuration of Be atom is, 4Be - 1s2 2s2, thus for Be2,the total number of electrons must be 8. Here Be2+ ion is given hence, total number of electrons in Be2+ ion must be equal to 7.

MO diagram of Be2+ ion,

The MO electronic configuration of Be2+ ion is,

()2 ()2 ()2 ()1

Bond order =

               == ½

If an atom or molecule has certain bond order then it is said to be stable. Greater the bond order more will be the stability.

Thus Be2+ ion is stable.
