Populations of prokaryotes can adapt rapidly to changes in the environment. Rapid prokaryote population growth by binary fission generates a great deal of genetic variation, increasing the likelihood that some members of the population will survive changes in the environment. Some prokaryotes form specialized cells called endospores that remain dormant through harsh conditions.
