Archaeplastids include red algae, green algae, and land plants. Red algae, which are mostly multicellular, include species that contribute to the structure of coral reefs and species that are commercially valuable. Green algae may be unicellular, colonial, or multicellular. The life cycles of many algae involve the alternation of haploid gametophyte and diploid sporophyte generations. Archaeplastida also includes land plants, which arose from a group of green algae called charophytes.
