Problem 3SAQ

Which is the correct Lewis structure for magnesium bromide?

Step-by-Step Solution:

Solution 3SAQ We are going to demonstrate the correct answer is c) Step 1 of 3 Lewis structure of magnesium bromide: Magnesium is second group element and bromine is seventh group element. Thus we can expect that Magnesium and Bromine has 2 and 7 electrons in the valence shell respectively, and they can be represented with the following Lewis structures: To reach their stability and gain the octet, Magnesium has to lose 2 electrons, while Bromine has to acquire one. Step 2 of 3 In losing 2 electrons, Magnesium becomes a cation having a a charge. In gaining an electrons, Bromine acquires a charge. The whole molecule has to be electrically neutral, so 2+ - for each Mg ion, we will need 2 Br to maintain it. The formula has to be MgBr . In orde2to represent that with Lewis structures, we need to indicate the charge of the involved ions, and - since we need 2 Br , the better is putting the Br anion’s structure between brackets. Step 3 of 3 For what we said in
