Chapter 8, Problem 7

(choose chapter or problem)

Recall that a fractal is a geometric figure that consists ofa pattern that is repeated infinitely on a smaller andsmaller scale. A well-known fractal is called theSierpinski Triangle. In the first stage, the midpoints ofthe three sides are used to create the vertices of a newtriangle, which is then removed, leaving three triangles. The first three stages are shown on the next page. Notethat each remaining triangle is similar to the originaltriangle. Assume that the length of each side of theoriginal triangle is one unit. Write a formula that describes the side length of thetriangles that will be generated in the th stage. Write aformula for the area of the triangles that will begenerated in the th stage.
