The pressure p, and density, , of the atmosphere at a height y above the earths surface

Chapter 1, Problem 23

(choose chapter or problem)

The pressure p, and density, , of the atmosphere at a height y above the earths surface are related by dp = gdy. Assuming that p and satisfy the adiabatic equation of state p = p0 0 , where = 1 is a constant and p0 and 0 denote the pressure and density at the earths surface, respectively, show that p = p0 1 ( 1) 0gy p0 /( 1) .
