Chapter 10, Problem 48

(choose chapter or problem)

The differential equation governing the charge q(t) on the capacitor in an RC circuit is dq dt + 1 RC q = 1 R E(t), where R and C are constants and E(t) represents the applied EMF. Over a time interval of 10 seconds, the applied EMF has the constant value 20 V. Thereafter, the EMF decays exponentially according to E(t) = 20e(t10) . If the capacitor is initially uncharged and RC = 1, determine the current in the circuit for t > 0. [Recall that the current i(t) is related to the charge on the capacitor by i(t) = dq dt .]
