(a) Show that the functions f(x, y) = x4 + y4 and g(x, y) = x4 y4 have a critical point
Chapter 7, Problem 19(choose chapter or problem)
(a) Show that the functions f(x, y) = x4 + y4 and g(x, y) = x4 y4 have a critical point at (0, 0) but the second derivative test is inconclusive at that point. (b) Give a reasonable argument to show that f has a relative minimum at (0, 0) and g has a saddle point at (0, 0).
