Chapter 5, Problem 5/247

(choose chapter or problem)

A length of power cable is suspended from the two towers as shown. The cable has a mass of 20 kg per meter of cable. If the maximum allowable cable tension is 75 kN, determine the mass \(\rho\) of ice per meter which can form on the cable without the maximum allowable tension being exceeded. If additional stretch in the cable is neglected, does the addition of the ice change the cable configuration?
