The probability that a radioactive nucleus will have lifetime t is the probability that it will survive from time 0 to time t multiplied by the probability that it will decay in the interval from t to t + dt. Use this to show that the average lifetime of a nucleus is equal to the inverse of the decay constant in Equation 38.3a.
