Chapter 7, Problem 26

(choose chapter or problem)

Let AX= B be a system where A= LU andA is a 3 X 3 matrix. The formula {4n3 - 3n2 - n)/6 for the total number of arithmetic operations in arriving at Land U gives 13 operations. How many of these operations are used to compute Land how many to compute U? The formula 2n2 - n for computing the total number of operations then needed to solve AX = B gives 15. How many of these operations are needed to solve LY = B and how many to solve UX = Y?
