(choose chapter or problem)

The beam is used in a railroad yard for loading and unloading cars. If the maximum anticipated hoist load is 12 kip, select the lightest-weight steel wide-flange section from Appendix B that will safely support the loading. The hoist travels along the bottom flange of the beam, \(1 \mathrm{ft} \leq x \leq 25 \mathrm{\ ft}\) and has negligible size. Assume the beam is pinned to the column at B and roller supported at A. The allowable bending stress is \(\sigma_{\text {allow }}=24\) ksi and the allowable shear stress is \(\tau_{\text {allow }}=12\) ksi.
