In Rutherford scattering we noted that angular momentumis conserved. The angular momentum of theincident particle relative to the target nucleus ismv0b where m is the mass, v0 is the initial velocity of the particle, and b is the impact parameter. Start withL r p and show that angular momentum is conserved,and the magnitude is given by mv0b along theentire path of the particle while it is scattered by theCoulomb force from a gold nucleus.
