Chapter 12, Problem 13

(choose chapter or problem)

Show that the eigenvalues for the (m 1) by (m 1) tridiagonal method matrix A given by aij = , j = i 1 or j = i + 1, 1 2, j = i, 0, otherwise are i = 1 4 sin i 2m 2 , for each i = 1, 2, ... , m 1, with corresponding eigenvectors v(i) , where v(i) j = sin(ij/m).
