Chapter 21, Problem 21.47

(choose chapter or problem)

(a) Kevlar is a polymer made from the reaction of the following two compounds: 1,4-benzenedicarbonyl chloride 1,4-benzenediamine Cl C Cl O C O H2N NH2 Give the structure of Kevlar in polymer notation. (b) Kevlar has such high strength that it can be used for bulletproof vests and other applications in which penetration resistance is important. This strength is due to inter-chain hydrogen bonds. Draw a few repeating units of two Kevlar chains and show the hydrogen bonds that connect the two chains. Indicate the hydrogen- bond donors and acceptors.
