Explain each of the following facts. (a) In the following compound, the hydrogens of the methyl group shown in red, as well as the imide proton, are readily exchanged for deuterium by dilute NaOD in D2O, but those of the other methyl group are not. (b) In the following ion, the hydrogens of the methyl group shown in red are most acidic, even though the other methyl group is directly attached to the positively charged nitrogen. (c) The reaction given in Fig. P26.48 takes place in aqueous base. (d) The compound 2-pyridone does not hydrolyze in aqueous NaOH using conditions that bring about the rapid hydrolysis of d-butyrolactam.
