QUESTION:

Osmium (Os) is the densest element known (density = 22.57 \(\mathrm{g}/\mathrm{cm}^3\)). Calculate the mass in pounds and in kilograms of an Os sphere 15 cm in diameter (about the size of a grapefruit). See Problem 1.57 for volume of a sphere.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

Here we have to calculate the mass of an Os sphere in pounds and in kilogram.

Given:

Density of osmium = 22.57 g/

Diameter = 15 cm

It is known that the volume of sphere is equal to = 4/3

Where r is the radius, can be calculated as r = d/2 = 15/2 = 7.5

It is known that mass can be calculated as mass = volume  density

Density is given in the question so in order to calculate the mass we have to find out the volume.
