Chapter 10 Problem 10.28

Question

Find the moment of inertia tensor I for the triangular prism of 10.12 with height h. (If you did 10.12, you've already done about half the work.) Your result should show that I has the form we've found for an axisymmetric body. This suggests what is true, that three-fold symmetry about an axis (symmetry under rotations of 120 degrees) is enough to ensure this form.

Solution

Step 1 of 9

The general expression for the moment of inertia tensor for a structure is shown as follows,

Here,  are the value of moment of inertia with respect to the axes.
