Converting a perspective formula to a Newman projection. Determine the configurationsof the asymmetric centers in the perspective formula and then draw the Fischer projectionwith its asymmetric centers in the same configuration. Because the Fischer projection is inan eclipsed conformation, you can draw the Newman projection in the eclipsed conformationby making the downward-pointing bond in the Fischer projection the upward-pointing bondon the back carbon of the Newman projection. Now add the other atoms to their bonds, keeping the atoms on the right side of the Fischer projection on the right side of the Newmanprojection and the atoms on the left side on the Fischer projection on the left side. Next, rotate the Newman projection so it is in a staggered conformation. (Here the back carbon isrotated clockwise, but it could have been rotated counterclockwise.)
