Chapter 0, Problem 24.15

(choose chapter or problem)

(a) Independent observations. The data come from the growth of a single icicle, not from a different icicle at each time. Explain why this would violate theindependence condition if we had data on the growth of a child rather than of anicicle. (The researchers decided that all icicles, unlike all children, grow at thesame rate if the conditions are held fixed. So one icicle can stand in for a separateicicle at each time.)(b) Linear relationship. Your plot and r 2 from Exercise 24.2 show that therelationship is very linear. Residual plots magnify effects. Plot the residualsagainst time. What kind of deviation from a straight line is now visible? (Thedeviation is clear in the residual plot, but it is very small in the originalscale.)(c) Spread about the line stays the same. Your plot in (b) shows that it does not.(Once again, the plot greatly magnifies small deviations.)
