Photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy, occurs in plant cells' chloroplasts. Chloroplasts are specialized organelles responsible for carrying out photosynthesis. Within the chloroplasts, the two stages of photosynthesis, known as the light-dependent reactions and the light-independent reactions (or Calvin cycle), occur in different regions.

The light-dependent reactions occur in the thylakoid membrane, a system of interconnected, flattened sacs called thylakoids. The thylakoid membrane is embedded with chlorophyll and other accessory pigments, which absorb light energy. These pigments capture photons from sunlight, exciting electrons within the chlorophyll molecules. The excited electrons are then passed along a series of electron carriers in the thylakoid membrane, creating an electron transport chain.
