Problem 47P

PROBLEM 47P

In Denver, Colorado, water boils at 95 °C. Explain.

Step-by-Step Solution:
Step 1 of 3

Solution 47P

As increase in height (altitude), the atmospheric pressure decreases. This is because, at higher altitudes, the weight of air above you is less, so the pressure  is lower.

On the other hand, boiling occurs when the vapour pressure exerted by water is equal to the atmospheric pressure. So boiling is easier at lower temperature when the pressure is lower. Thus , at a lower pressure, water boils at a lower temperature.

In Denver, Colorado, the altitude is around 1600 meters (5200 feet) above sea level, Therefore,  the average atmospheric pressure is about 83% of what it is at sea level. So in the Denver, Colorado , atmospheric pressure is lower due to the altitude, which results the lowering of boiling temperature  of water. Therefore, in  Denver, Colorado, water boils at 95 °C.
