Rate of species in a reaction entirely depends on the behaviour with concentration and time.

As the reaction proceeds the concentration of reactants decreases and concentration of products increases.thus the rate of forward reaction or rate at which the reactants are reacting would decrease and that of backward reaction would increase with time.
