QUESTION:

How can astrophysicists tell whether a star is receding or approaching Earth?

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 3

Every star produces light with a unique range of frequencies that can be identified as its emission spectrum. From the emission spectrum of the star, we can identify its chemical composition and determine the type of spectrum we should anticipate.

However, if a star is moving, this spectrum will change in some way depending on whether the star is traveling away from or toward the observer ( Doppler effect).
