Chapter 26 Problem 24RCQ

Question

Why are metals shiny?

Solution

Step 1 of 3

Metals are shiny because of their atomic structure and the way that light interacts with it. The outermost electrons in metal atoms are not bound to a specific atom, instead, they are free to move throughout the metal. These free electrons are called "conduction electrons" and they are responsible for the metallic bonding.
