Chapter 6 Problem 47TAE

Question

In terms of impulse and momentum, why do mountain climbers favor nylon ropes, which stretch considerably under tension?

Solution

Step 1 of 2

We know that the momentum is the property of a moving body that the body has by virtue of its mass and motion and that is equal to the product of the body's mass and velocity.

To prevent injuries when the rope goes tight, you want to make the force associated with this change in momentum to be as small as possible. This means you want the time that the force is applied to be as long as possible.
