QUESTION:

Problem 11Q

The oceans contain a tremendous amount of thermal (internal) energy. Why, in general, is it not possible to put this energy to useful work?

ANSWER:

Solution 11Q

Step 1 of 2:

We have a tremendous amount of ocean thermal energy. But in practice, it's impossible to extract the energy to do useful work. Our aim here is to explain the reason for that.

The ocean thermal energy could be extracted using an engine that operates at two different temperatures. The engine to be used would be costly and have environmental difficulties that connect the surface water and the deep ocean water.
